How to play
Seat 4–8 adults, including the host, and use one phone or printout to read a starter set below. Read both options, label them A and B, then let everyone choose together or pass without explanation. Explanations are optional: hear at most two short volunteer reasons, with no personal stories needed, then move on. Keep reactions kind and stop after eight questions; there are no scores or answers to defend.
Two eight-question starter sets
Choose one set; each mixes all five themes. The numbers link to the groups containing the full questions.
- Everyday tradeoffs: 1, 12, 16, 23, 28, 31, 41, 45.
- Extra complications: 2, 11, 21, 24, 33, 38, 39, 42.
The question bank
The first option is A; the second is B. Treat every situation as imaginary, rather than a request to share what happens in anyone’s real life.
Work, meetings, and tech · 1–10
- Would you rather have every meeting end ten minutes early but receive the recap as a riddle, or get a perfectly clear recap after ten extra minutes of “one last thing”?
- Would you rather have a printer that never jams but adds “A bold choice” to every page, or a silent printer that eats the first sheet of every job?
- Would you rather have email sort itself perfectly but send you an hourly victory notification, or get no notifications but sort every “just checking in” yourself?
- Would you rather have autocorrect that never makes a mistake but signs every message “Warmly,” or type everything yourself and have one message a day go to the wrong group chat?
- Would you rather attend a short meeting with no agenda and a surprise topic, or know the agenda but spend the first ten minutes watching everyone find it?
- Would you rather have unlimited phone storage but every photo saves twice, or perfectly organized photos with room for only 100?
- Would you rather have a phone that never needs charging but plays every notification at full volume, or a silent phone that dies at 15% without warning?
- Would you rather have video calls with a clear picture but every voice delayed five seconds, or clear sound but a picture that updates once a minute?
- Would you rather write a five-sentence weekly update that nobody asks about, or write one sentence and answer three follow-up emails about it?
- Would you rather have all your weekly meetings packed into Monday, or one meeting that starts halfway through lunch every weekday?
Chores and home · 11–20

- Would you rather have every fitted sheet fold perfectly but your towels arrive rolled too wide for the shelf, or have neatly folded towels and wrestle each sheet into a fabric burrito?
- Would you rather have a closet that always finds what you need but requires putting things back alphabetically, or toss things anywhere and search for five minutes each morning?
- Would you rather have houseplants that never die but slowly lean toward whoever is talking, or beautiful plants that wilt dramatically if you forget them for one day?
- Would you rather have a dishwasher that loads itself but takes three hours, or load it yourself and have everything clean in three minutes?
- Would you rather have every light switch labeled correctly but in rhyming couplets, or keep guessing which switch runs the garbage disposal?

Food and cooking · 21–30
- Would you rather get free takeout forever with the restaurant choosing your meal, or have someone cook exactly what you want and leave every dish for you?
- Would you rather have toast that’s always perfectly crisp but butter that spreads like a brick, or butter that spreads effortlessly on toast that’s always a little too pale?
- Would you rather have perfectly ripe avocados that all become ready on the same afternoon, or one ready each day with a pit that takes up half the fruit?
- Would you rather have a recipe that takes exactly fifteen minutes but uses every bowl you own, or a one-pot meal that takes an hour and smells ready the entire time?
- Would you rather always know what’s for dinner a week ahead but never get to change it, or decide every night at 6:30 with nothing planned?
- Would you rather have pizza with perfect toppings on a soggy crust, or a perfectly crisp crust with twice as much sauce as cheese?
- Would you rather chop no onions ever again but peel every clove of garlic yourself, or get ready-peeled garlic and dice onions for every recipe that calls for them?
- Would you rather have a toaster that remembers everyone’s preference but takes turns one slice at a time, or toast six slices together at one compromise setting?
- Would you rather get a small basket of perfectly crisp fries, or a huge basket of fries that go limp after the first minute?

- Would you rather have your package arrive a day early at a pickup counter, or at your door a day late with “Almost there!” updates all day?
- Would you rather have a navigation app that always avoids traffic but narrates every turn like a tour guide, or quiet directions along a route with one predictable ten-minute backup?

- Would you rather travel with a suitcase that fits everything but must be carried, or a rolling suitcase that fits only half your packing list?
- Would you rather find everything on your grocery list in a store that rearranges weekly, or know every aisle by heart but visit a second store for one item?
- Would you rather catch a bus that arrives exactly on time but stops at every corner, or an express bus whose arrival window is “sometime in the next twenty minutes”?

- Would you rather host with magically spotless dishes but guests who linger an extra hour, or have everyone leave exactly on time and face a sink full of dishes?
- Would you rather have guests bring every dish you need but all need oven space at once, or handle the food yourself while guests handle all the cleanup?

Hosting notes
For question 31, label immediate parking plus a ten-minute walk A, and circling for ten minutes plus parking outside B. In a seven-person group, including the host, four might choose A, two B, and one pass. A volunteer says, “A—the sidewalk doesn’t make me hunt for a space”; another says, “B—I’d like the shorter trip back.” Say “Next choice” and move on without following up on the pass or asking for real-life examples.
With four or five adults, let a quiet pause be fine. With six to eight, collect choices together; if voices overlap, use raised hands for A and then B, with hands down for passing. Keep explanations to at most two volunteers, about ten seconds each. If neither option fits, choose the less inconvenient imaginary option or pass; no defense is needed. Reread on request, and replace an accidentally repeated prompt with an unused number.
Allow about two minutes to choose a set and explain, then eight minutes for eight questions, including choices, optional reasons, and the closing sentence. Up to five extra minutes can cover rereadings or thinking time, not extra prompts. Stop after question eight, or finish the current prompt and close if you reach about fifteen minutes sooner: “That’s our last choice—thanks for joining in.”
This standalone bank uses shared choices and optional explanations; the 30-minute game-night plan uses “This or That, with a Twist” as a timed segment within a three-game evening.
